Valve Cover Racing

2003

by Suzanne and Bill Glanville

The New Lodge at Black Creek Park was the place to be on January 19. Many members bundled up and ventured out for our Club’s first event of the new year bringing their conversation, sharing hors d’oeuvres, beverages, and, of course, entering their valve cover race car in hot competition. Seventeen racers participated and the enthusiasm and excitement as each racer went down the track was greater than ever.

The old guard and young speedsters represented the racers that made it to the podium. George Haynes took first place with his GT6 racer. George was undefeated during the entire event. A first place trophy, donated by Bill Vandeweghe owner of Van’s Machine Shop was presented to the winner by John Erwin, master machinist.

Bill, also arranged for Ron Rigby a motor sports photographer to chronicle the valve cover race event.

The Avery girls (Carolyn and Elizabeth with their friend, Colleen Riley), racing #28 came in second. They won all their races in the first elimination round until they raced against George. This forced them into the second elimination bracket where they took on all comers winning their way back to a head to head match race against George for the second time. The excitement was in the air as this was final race of the day.

Third place went to Paul Heaney and his mysterious buzzing valve cover racer #63.

Everyone had an opportunity to vote for his or her favorite racer. Those honors went to a valve cover disguised as a really furry cat, and raced by Jared Langer.

Special thanks goes to Pete Pegoni for judging, Steve Sangster for keeping score during the races, Tom and Lia Glanville and Joyce and Pete Pegoni for setup and cleanup.
